CRAWFORD COUNTY, Ark. – Arkansas Highway Police seized nearly 5,000 pounds of marijuana, marking one of the five largest drug seizures in history, according to the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT).
ARDOT said the discovery was made during a safety inspection along I-40 in Crawford County, Arkansas. That’s on the western side of the state, about five hours from Memphis.
Inside of a commercial vehicle, highway police found seven pallets of illegal marijuana, totaling 4,900 pounds. ARDOT said the marijuana could have been sold for $16 million on the streets.
Arkansas Highway Patrol Chief Jeff Holmes said that the seizure ranks among the top five largest drug busts on record.
Officials said they believe the 27-year-old driver was on his way from California to Georgia when he was arrested in Crawford County.
The seizure marks the second large marijuana discovery in Crawford County in just over a week. On February 3, Arkansas State Police confiscated 2,872 pounds of marijuana in the same county along I-40.
