EAST HAVEN, CT (WFSB) – Three suspects were arrested on Wednesday for having a significant quantity of marijuana at Planet Zaza.
The East Haven Police Department, in collaboration with the DEA Task Force and the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, launched an investigation into Planet Zaza, a shop located at 744 Foxon Road, after receiving multiple complaints about illegal and unlicensed marijuana sales.
Investigators conducted several controlled purchases from the establishment as part of their inquiry.
On September 18 at 4:30 p.m., authorities executed a search warrant at the business.
They discovered a wide varity of THC and marijuana products openly displayed for sale, including flower, edibles, and vape products.
Several employees were identified assisting customers during the operation.
Gallel Saidi, 28, of Bronx, NY, was observed sorting materials next to a large quantity of pre-packaged marijuana.
Investigators found that while the products were packaged to mimic those from licensed dispensaries, Planet Zaza had been using professional-grade packaging materials and was packaging marijuana on-site.
The sale of marijuana at unregulated establishments like Planet Zaza poses a significant public safety risk, especially given recent alarming incidents involving dangerous substances found in marijuana products from similar shops.
Investigators seized a large quantity of marijuana products, electronic and video surveillance equipment, and point-of-sale systems.
Two employees were arrested, while one was issued a misdemeanor summons and released.
Saidi and David Abrea, 28, also from Bronx, NY, face charges of illegal manufacturing and distribution of marijuana, as well as illegal sale of marijuana.
Saidi is being held on a $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on October 2, 2024, while Abrea was released on a $50,000 bond and has a court date set for the same day.
Joel Infante, 18, received a misdemeanor summons for sale of marijuana.
This investigation marks the fourth seizure of illegal and unregulated marijuana products from Planet Zaza.
Police are urging parents to discuss the dangers of purchasing and consuming marijuana from unregulated sources with their children.
Although packaging may appear legitimate, products sold outside licensed dispensaries can be harmful and may contain dangerous substances.
