CHESTER, NY — A careless scofflaw didn’t learn his lesson after a brush with justice, according to police.

This “Groundhog’s Day” tale started on Feb 8, just after 1:30 a.m., when officers responded to check on the welfare of a driver who was reportedly slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle that was stopped in the roadway with the door open at the intersection of Kings Highway and Laroe Road in Chester. The man in the driver’s seat was disoriented, according to police, who say the driver was intoxicated and was operating with a suspended driver’s license.

Approximately 6.5 pounds of marijuana was also in plain view, cops said. In fact, the vehicle contained 30 Mason jars, vacuum-sealed bags and resealable plastic bags filled with weed, according to police. The vehicle also contained a quantity of THC oil, THC gummies, a scale, and over $1,800 in US currency in a backpack, officers reported.

The 38-year-old driver from Goshen was charged with criminal possession of cannabis, criminal use of drug paraphernalia, driving with a blood alcohol content greater than .08 percent, driving while intoxicated and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Since none of these charges are eligible for bail in New York State, no arraignment was conducted and the man was released with an appearance ticket to appear for arraignment in town court on February 11.

He did not appear for his arraignment.

It wouldn’t be long before cops ran into him again, however.

On Feb. 23, at about 1 a.m., an officer was patrolling on State Route 17M and spotted a grey two-door sedan traveling north with a burned-out headlight. He stopped the car and soon learned the driver was the same 38-year-old from Goshen. His driver’s license was still suspended and this time, he had 10 Mason jars containing marijuana in plain view in the rear of his vehicle and over $1,000 in US currency, police said.

He was charged with criminal possession of cannabis, and aggravated unlicensed operation. He was issued another appearance ticket to appear for arraignment in town court on March 11.
