YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — A 27-year-old man was arrested Friday morning after firefighters responded to a house fire and discovered a marijuana operation in the basement.
The fire was reported around 4:39 a.m. at a residence in the 100 block of North Alpine Road, according to emergency dispatchers.
Crews arrived and initially saw just smoke but did end up finding flames in the basement, dispatchers said—along with what police described as a “hydroponic marijuana-growing system.”
After the fire was under control, officers searched the home and seized multiple marijuana plants, a hydroponic growing system, a handgun, and additional illegal drugs and paraphernalia, according to Northern York Country Regional Police.
The cause of the fire was found to be electrical, stemming from the hydroponic growing system.
Now, six people and three pets are displaced and receiving help from the American Red Cross.
The 27-year-old, who police did not name, is charged with one felony count of endangering the welfare of children, one felony count of manufacturing a controlled substance, and six misdemeanor counts of recklessly endangering another person.
Police are continuing to investigate and ask anyone with information to call Northern York County Regional Police at (717) 467-8355 or email tips@nycrpd.org.
