KY medical marijuana dispensary license applications reach almost 2,300
The deadline to apply for a medical marijuana license in Kentucky expired Saturday at midnight, and several applications were filed in some of the final hours leading up to it.Medicinal cannabis will be legal at the beginning of next year. Applications for businesses to cultivate, process and dispense have been open since July 1, and it was off to a slow start. Then, at 4 a.m. on Aug. 29, there were 1,002 applications for dispensaries and 1,227 for all licenses combined.The Office of Medical Cannabis’ website last updated its number of applications at 4:17 p.m. on Aug. 30. In just those 36 hours, the number of dispensary applications more than doubled to 2,282.The number of licenses applied for combined went up to 2,650.We are still waiting to see how many more applied between then and the midnight deadline Saturday.Only 48 dispensary licenses will initially be issued, divided among 11 regions. Any licenses that are accepted will be entered into a lottery system.
