OWENSBORO, Ky. (WFIE) – The Owensboro City Commission passed an ordinance to create more restrictions for future cannabis dispensaries.

The state is no longer accepting applications for dispensaries and processors.

Thousands of applications were submitted statewide.

Come January, there will be 48 dispensaries across the commonwealth, four of those will be in the western Kentucky region.

By October, first the state will determine which applications are approved, then a lottery will take place to choose which will be awarded licenses.

Tuesday night, Owensboro City Commissioners approved an ordinance creating more restrictions for medical cannabis businesses, on top of the ones already set by the state.

For example, if a license is awarded to a business in Owensboro, Whitesville or Daviess County, it can not be located within the downtown overlay area.

It can only have one sign outside, which cannot be animated or electronic. There also cannot be a medical cannabis facility within one mile of another.

We’ve reached out to the state cannabis commission to find out how many people applied for a medical marijuana license in our western Kentucky counties and are waiting to hear back.
