FAIRFIELD, Ohio (WXIX) – The City of Fairfield has effectively approved the sale of marijuana within its limits. On Monday, the council created a plan to allow the opening of one dispensary.
The new ordinance uses some zoning limitations to essentially limit a potential dispensary to using only one plot of land within the whole city.
FOX19 NOW is told some marijuana companies might be posturing to take over.
“Not everyone got what they wanted, but you know what? It’s a good solution,” said City Councilman Tim Meyers.
Fairfield Development Services Director Greg Kathman says the ordinance will essentially allow for only one dispensary in the city with a few rules.
The dispensary cannot be within a certain distance of a school, park or other public area. It needs to be on State Route 4.It needs to comply with SR-4′s corridor overlay.
That means the dispensary will be near Jungle Jim’s, which Kathman believes will create a positive net for Fairfield.
“We’ll see, obviously, a business going into what’s a vacant building at this point, so we’ll see building occupancy and some increased tax revenue,” he said.
According to 2023 voting data, legalization of marijuana was something Fairfield residents voted in favor of. Kathman says his department expects businesses to be eager to open up here in the future.
“We have been getting a number of phone calls from marijuana companies as the legislation has been pending through the city process, so I suspect there will be great interest,” he added.
The ordinance passed unanimously within the city council on Monday night.
