August’s sales were up 3% from July and increased even in regions that border Ohio.

Although some cannabis companies in Michigan may have feared the launch of the Ohio marijuana market last month, it appears that locals still have quite the healthy appetite for the plant, given that sales topped $295 million in August.

According to the state Cannabis Regulatory Agency, Michigan dispensaries sold a whopping $294.1 million in recreational marijuana goods and another $1.2 million in medical, for a total of $295.3 million.

That’s despite the fact that neighboring Ohio also sold $44 million in cannabis for August after its recreational market went live the first week of the month, albeit with far fewer dispensaries than Michigan. Ohio has just 126 dispensaries compared to Michigan’s 827 recreational cannabis shops and 186 medical dispensaries.

Among product types, cannabis flower still remains king in Michigan, accounting for $129.3 million of  last month’s sales. In second place was vape cartridges, which hit $54.3 million in sales, followed by inhalable compound concentrates with $41.8 million in sales.

Michigan sales were up about 3% from July, when dispensaries sold $286 million worth of cannabis goods, the Detroit Free Press reported, and the market is up 9% year-over-year from $271 million in sales last August.

Even the regions of Michigan that directly border Ohio, the southeast and southwest, increased cannabis sales month-over-month from July to August, the Free Press found.

That could have to do with prices, the Free Press noted. An ounce of marijuana flower in Ohio still costs consumers about $250, while the same can be found easily in Michigan for $80, a huge price difference driven largely by how many more cannabis companies there are competing heavily to the north than in Ohio.
