Canadian medical cannabis company Aurora Cannabis Inc. ACB ACB is innovating its operations via research in auto-flowering technology.
The company said the innovative work provides foundational insight into the flowering mechanism in cannabis. The research would support future breeding strategies. It also could be utilized to advance outdoor cannabis cultivation in high-latitude regions, such as Canada.
Aurora has received a US Patent 12,002,546, “Methods of Determining Sensitivity to Photoperiod in Cannabis”, allowing for its breeding program to identify and select for the auto-flowering trait.
Having a genetic characteristic to automatically transition the plant from the vegetative stage to the flowering stage the auto-flowering technology doesn’t have to rely on changes in light cycles.

Jose Celedon, PhD, director of breeding and genetics at Aurora, praised the company’s research efforts.
“As a company backed by science, we have long invested in research both independently and with leading academic institutions, and have achieved significant learning from our work,” Celedon said. “Our recent work on auto-flowering will be a game-changer for cannabis and hemp production.
Aurora’s research and innovation efforts have resulted in improved potency and yield, thereby driving down cost per gram and increasing overall efficiency.
In the meantime, Aurora recently teamed up with Vectura Fertin Pharma, Inc., an innovator in wellness and healthcare, to launch the newly developed Luo CBD lozenge. The product was developed by Vectura Fertin Pharma and represents Aurora’s first medical cannabis CBD lozenge to be introduced in Canada.
