Indiana gubernatorial nominee Jennifer McCormick has revealed her Commonsense Cannabis Legalization Plan on Sept. 12. The plan aims to legalize cannabis in a step-by-step and responsible manner. The plan starts with a controlled medical marijuana enterprise and paves the way for full adult-use legalization.

McCormick believes the time for cannabis legalization is among us.

“Hoosiers have made it clear — they support adult-use cannabis and are frustrated by Indiana’s outdated prohibition laws,” McCormick said in a statement. “Our plan takes a commonsense approach by first introducing a well-regulated medical marijuana industry, allowing us to address potential regulatory challenges and ensure a smooth transition to well-regulated and legal adult-use cannabis.”

The plan’s key components include:

Indiana Cannabis Commission: Establishing this independent body to oversee regulation, licensing and compliance for the cannabis industry, ensuring a transparent market.

Medical Marijuana Industry: Launching a regulated medical marijuana market to provide access and prepare for a future transition to adult-use legalization.

Pathway to Adult-Use: Outlining a clear plan to legalize cannabis for adult use, addressing challenges gradually to ensure effective regulation.

Regulating Hemp-Derived THC: Addressing the unregulated hemp-derived THC products flooding the market by implementing safety regulations.

Economic Benefits: Projecting an estimated $172 million in annual tax revenue, which could significantly boost the state’s economy and fund essential services.

“Indiana is an island of prohibition surrounded by states with legal cannabis industries,” McCormick said in a statement. “By taking a responsible, phased approach, we can ensure that our state is prepared for full adult-use legalization while immediately providing relief through medical marijuana.”

McCormick’s plan reflects a strategic shift toward modernizing Indiana’s cannabis laws and tapping into the economic benefits of a legal cannabis market.
