SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Governor Gavin Newsom proposed an emergency regulation earlier this month on hemp products.

Newsom said in a press release that his goal is to protect children against ‘drug peddlers’ who target kids with their dangerous hemp products. The emergency regulation would enforce that no industrial hemp food, beverage and dietary products would have any detectable THC or other cannabinoids per serving and would limit the number of servings to five per package.

The regulation would also make the minimum age to buy these products 21.

While a lot of people agree with the goal of the regulations, hemp businesses, farmers, and consumers are concerned with how it will affect the industry.

“CBD topical creams people use for joint pains, it’s actually very popular with Californians. Almost all of those have a small amount of THC in them, a detectable amount. Those products will be banned. You know a lot of people use high CBD low THC capsules to manage pain, all of those will be banned. There’s a whole range of products that fall into that category,” Jake Bullock, Co-Founder and CEO of Cann, an alternative alcohol that contains mild amounts of THC.

According to Bullock, his company and companies like his have been working with California lawmakers to get policies to regulate hemp products passed, but they never got through legislation.
