STRASBURG (WJER) (Oct. 7, 2024) – The village’s ban on marijuana-related businesses is having the desired effect.

Zoning Inspector Ted Foster says he was contacted last month by a representative from a nationwide cannabis company. They wanted to know about the permit process for dispensaries, which were allowed in certain parts of town until recently.

“For anyone who was thinking that would never reach a small town village like Strasburg, we were that close. So well done to the council for bringing that ordinance. I believe it was done as an emergency, which was very fortunate.”

Marijuana dispensaries are also prohibited in New Philadelphia, but the one on West High Avenue is technically in Goshen Township. Strasburg Councilman Dustin Briggs says the village is missing out on the additional revenue and could still end up with a dispensary on its doorstep.

“Take the truck parking lot beside Hardee’s. That’s township, so you could build a dispensary right there. It’s right in the village, and you get nothing from it.”

Communities can restrict or ban cannabis-related businesses but can’t stop residents who are of age from using or growing marijuana at their homes.
