CUBA — Two people were arrested after police raided the former D.F. Stauffer Biscuit Co. factory southeast of the village on Thursday.

According to a press release, Cuba Town Police seized 600 cannabis plants at the former factory at 8670 Farnsworth Road during a 7 a.m. search Thursday. Cuba police charged two people, Daniel S. Ackerman, 58, of Cuba, and Ana Laura Maldonando-Delgato, 31, no address given, with several felonies and misdemeanors after the search.

During the search, police reported finding around 600 cannabis plants weighing 1,000 pounds, as well as 100 pounds of dried cannabis bud, an undisclosed quantity of psilocybin mushrooms, laboratory equipment and a handgun. Officials issued a “conservative estimated street value” of $3.5 million, but did not detail how that figure was calculated.

Ackerman was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of first-degree criminal possession of cannabis, both class D felonies; and seventh-degree criminal possession of a weapon, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest, all class A misdemeanors. Maldonando-Delgato was charged with two counts of first-degree criminal possession of cannabis, a class D felony; and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and two counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both class A misdemeanors.

Police believe Maldonando-Delgato was living in the U.S. without legal permission, and was turned over to U.S. Border Patrol agents.

The D.F. Stauffer Biscuit Co. factory at the site closed at the end of 2017, according to Times Herald records. According to the Allegany County Office of Real Property, Ackerman purchased the site in May 2020 for $42,000.

Cuba police were assisted by the Allegany County Sheriff’s office and drone team, the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit, the Olean Police Department Street Crimes Unit, Allegany County District Attorney’s Office, state Department of Environmental Conservation, Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Border Patrol, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York, Cuba Ambulance Service and the Cuba dog control officer.
