MANKATO — Blue Earth County will have a minimum of six cannabis retail businesses, but that number could be higher if smaller towns and Mankato decide to allow more.

The Blue Earth County Board Tuesday heard from County Zoning Administrator John Considine about a proposed ordinance staff has been working on. The board is to vote on the ordinance in November.

Under state law, there will be one retail business per every 12,500 residents in a county, if that many businesses file for a permit.

Considine said that means there would be at least six cannabis businesses allowed in the county.

“So if Mankato decides to have six, the county wouldn’t be obligated to issue any more.”

But Mankato and small towns in the county could decide to allow more cannabis businesses than that minimum.

Considine said smaller towns could ask the county to provide permit registrations for cannabis businesses in their towns, but the towns would still retain their own zoning requirements for the business.
