The New York State Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) announced the launch of a new Seed-to-Sale (STS) Tracking system to enhance regulatory oversight and transparency within the state’s cannabis industry. This comprehensive system will require all licensees to use an electronic inventory system capable of integrating with the NY STS Tracking System (BioTrack). The implementation of this system ensures that cannabis is monitored from the planting stage through to final sale, securing the integrity of the supply chain for both adult-use and medical cannabis sectors.
As part of the initial launch, OCM will cover up to $250,000 in inventory tag purchases, a move that demonstrates the state’s commitment to supporting the industry’s cultivators, processors and microbusinesses compliance efforts as they get their STS Tracking Systems integrated into their business operations. These tags serve as unique identifiers for cannabis products, maintaining traceability from cultivation through processing, packaging, laboratory testing, and ultimately, sale. In addition to tracking products from production to retail, permitted laboratories are also required to submit cannabis product testing data to BioTrack, facilitating a seamless and integrated flow of information.

Mandated by Section 78 of the Cannabis Law, licensees are required to report their data to OCM via the BioTrack Application Programming Interface (API), which is now available for integration. By January 17, 2025, licensees must obtain a 3rd party inventory tracking system that will be capable of integrating with the NY-API. The Office will share additional information regarding the implementation logistics, and timeframe for integration as they become available. Please note, licensees will need to work with their software vendors to come into compliance with this data reporting requirement. This new system not only enhances OCM’s regulatory capabilities but also ensures that New York’s cannabis industry continues to operate with transparency and accountability, promoting public trust and compliance across the board.
