LAPLACE, La. — A LaPlace man was arrested on Friday after an 11-year-old student brought THC edibles to East John Preparatory Academy and handed them out, sending one student to the hospital, according to the St. John the Baptist Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said Kerry Clofer was arrested and booked with several charges including possession of illegal narcotics and cruelty to juveniles.
His arrest followed an incident on Dec. 5 when four students, including the 11-year-old, consumed the THC gummies at school. The sheriff’s office said one student was taken to a local hospital.
“The students’ ages are age 12, 11 and two 10-year-olds,” a release said.
An investigation revealed that one of the students had taken a package of THC edibles from their parent or guardian at home and brought them to school, distributing them to other students.
Detectives obtained a court-authorized search warrant for the student’s home in the 200 block of Magnolia Avenue to look for any additional illegal narcotics.
During the search, detectives discovered more than 1,300 grams of THC edibles, multiple methamphetamine tablets, and drug paraphernalia.
Clofer was charged with the following:
• Possession with the intent to distribute a Schedule I (Marijuana)
• Possession of a Schedule II (Methamphetamine)
• Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
• Cruelty to a Juvenile
His bond is set at $14,000.
