Assembly Bill 1775 (AB 1775) was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom on September 30, 2024, introducing significant changes to California’s cannabis industry. This bill, authored by Assemblymember Matt Haney, amends Section 26200 of the Business and Professions Code to allow for expanded services at licensed cannabis consumption lounges. Specifically, it permits the preparation and sale of noncannabis food and beverages, as well as live entertainment, in areas where cannabis consumption is authorized.
This could be a game changer for those who visit Cannabis businesses but would like to spend more time there for entertainment.
AB 1775 represents a significant shift in California’s approach to cannabis consumption lounges. By allowing on-site preparation and sale of noncannabis food and beverages, the bill opens new revenue streams for cannabis businesses, enabling them to offer a more “cafe-style” experience. The addition of live entertainment and ticketed events further enhances the customer experience, transforming lounges into multi-functional social venues.
As of this time, Palm Springs among other cities in the Coachella Valley have not yet taken up the task to amend local laws allowing for Cannabis businesses to offer food, beverages, or entertainment but it could be coming.
