Hotly-contested licenses to be a part of Delaware’s legal marijuana industry will be awarded soon.
The Office of the Marijuana Commissioner is holding a lottery Thursday in the “open retail category.” 15 retail licenses will be available: seven in New Castle County, three in Kent County and five in Sussex County. However, 529 applicants are eligible for the lottery.
The OMC held lotteries for cultivation and testing earlier this fall. The applicants who are selected in Thursday’s lottery will be contacted about the next steps.
Under the Delaware Marijuana Control Act that became law last year, adults will be able to use marijuana recreationally. It will be sometime in 2025 before licenses are granted and adults are able to purchase marijuana for recreational use.
The drawing Thursday is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. It will be livestreamed on Facebook.
