OHIO (WFFT) — Ohio’s monthly recreational cannabis sales began to surpass the state’s medical sales in 2024.
The state has been producing and selling cannabis since Jan. 14, 2019 when Ohio approved it for medical use.
In August, Ohio became the 24th state to legalize recreational cannabis use, with sales surpassing $242 million in just five months.
Ohio’s Division of Cannabis Control, under the Ohio Department of Commerce, revealed last year’s sales numbers in its Historical Sales Data.
Within the five-month timeframe of legalization, non-medical cannabis sales were on an upward trend and took up over half of the monthly sales through the end of 2024.
For December, 67.25% of the state’s cannabis sales were for non-medical use.
Overall, recreational cannabis makes up 10.5% of Ohio’s total cannabis sales and 12.66% of manufactured units since 2019.
The Division of Cannabis Control also reported over 3.2 million transactions were made for non-medical cannabis.
To date, Ohio has issued 126 dual-use certificates of operations to dispensaries across 49 counties.
Early numbers show similar cannabis buying trends continuing into 2025.
