Massachusetts cannabis dispensaries sold an eye-popping $1.64 billion last year, according to statistics released Thursday by the state Cannabis Control Commission. That’s a new annual record for the state’s marijuana market, which launched recreational cannabis sales in 2018, the commission said in a press release.
“We’re looking ahead to continued growth in 2025 and beyond as we seek to expand the industry with new social consumption licenses,” CCC Acting Chairman Bruce Stebbins said in the release.
Massachusetts cannabis shops ended the year strong with $140.2 million in December sales, the third-best sales month of the year after August and July and a slight year-over-year increase from the $140.1 million sold in December 2023.
Sales all-time since the market launched in 2018 have reached $7.2 billion, according to state figures, and industry employment has reached 20,280 statewide.
A pair of cannabis holidays in 2024 both hit new record sales highs, the CCC said: on 4/20 last year, dispensaries sold a total of $8.5 million, and then sold $7.9 million on Green Wednesday before Thanksgiving. New delivery operators also contributed almost $15 million in sales last year to the industry total, the CCC said, a roughly $3 million increase.
The CCC also recently hired a new executive director, Travis Ahern, a sign that hopefully the turbulent months of 2024 at the commission are behind it. Ahern is scheduled to start his new position March 3.
