JACKSON, Mich. (WILX) – A man suffered severe burns to his face and hands while trying to extract THC from marijuana.

Around 12:13 a.m. Friday morning, officers with the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety responded to a report of a fire at the America Best Motel on Royal Drive in Jackson.

Upon arrival, they found a small fire in the bathroom and a 38-year-old man with severe burns to his face and hands. The fire was quickly extinguished.

It was determined that the man had been attempting to extract THC from marijuana using butane when the gases ignited, causing an explosion and small fire.

The man was taken to Henry Ford Hospital of Jackson and his condition is not known. Two other people were in the room but were not injured.

The incident is still under investigation. Once completed, it will be sent to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office for a review of charges.
