LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – A Mid-Michigan college is doing what it can to try and grow the state’s cannabis industry. Baker College is offering a new online cannabis education program.

It hasn’t even been a full seven years since recreational marijuana was legalized in Michigan. However, it’s already grown into a multi-billion dollar industry.

Since sales began in 2019, Michigan has seen around $10 billion in marijuana sales. Michigan is the number two cannabis industry in the entire nation.

According to a list of the states with the top marijuana sales in the nation for 2024, Michigan ranks above states like Illinois and Massachusetts.

The CEO of Green Flower, a leading cannabis education provider said the fast growth the industry has seen in Michigan has created a need for “well-trained professionals.”

Over 45,000 people work in Michigan’s cannabis industry. Baker College is partnering with Green Flower to increase the workforce by offering a new online cannabis education and workforce development program.

“In the cannabis industry, you need well-trained workers to grow the plant, well-trained workers to create the finished products […] and you need people to sell those products in a responsible and educated way,” Green Flower CEO Max Simon said.

The three online certificate programs run nine weeks each and cover the three sectors of the industry that have the highest job growth.

“The hope is that we are creating skilled, trustworthy, credible professionals that can not only get involved now but can ultimately become entrepreneurs and executives to build this next great cannabis industry,” Simon said.
