A report from Texas Public Radio highlights a recent University of Houston poll revealing a growing divide among Texans on cannabis use. While a majority support legalizing recreational marijuana, a substantial number favor banning THC, the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis. In addition to the support for recreational use, the poll found that almost 80% of respondents supported the legalization of medicinal marijuana.
The poll, published on February 5, 2025, reveals that 62% of Texans are in favor of legalizing recreational marijuana, but there is notable resistance to THC products. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, a staunch advocate for banning THC, took to X to remark on the findings, stating that “Texans see these stores everywhere: in their neighborhoods and especially around schools where children have easy access. People simply don’t want them around.”
“Texas is surrounded by states that have already relaxed marijuana laws or legalized casino gambling,” said Renée Cross, researcher and senior executive director at the Hobby School of the University of Houston. “Advocates for both gambling and marijuana legalization argue that Texas is losing out on potential revenue to neighboring states.”
Although Lt. Gov. Patrick remains firm in his push for a complete ban on THC products arguing that “Once the facts are out in the open, there is no doubt these public polling numbers will rise as more Texans demand a ban on these dangerous THC products,” the poll suggests that Texans are increasingly open to rethinking the state’s cannabis policies.
With these findings, it remains clear that cannabis policy in Texas is evolving, and lawmakers may face increasing pressure to accommodate shifting public attitudes despite what Patrick states.
