More than 60% of Texans support legalizing recreational marijuana, according to a new University of Houston poll. However, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick remains firmly opposed, pushing to ban all non-medical forms of THC.
Heather Fazio, with the Texas Cannabis Policy Center, said Patrick is taking aggressive steps to shut down the state’s consumable hemp industry.
“This session is going to be unique because we have a multi-billion dollar hemp industry in the state, which means there are nearly 10,000 licensed business owners who have everything to lose,” she said.
With Patrick’s opposition, legislation to legalize recreational marijuana appears unlikely to pass. Meanwhile, support for medical marijuana remains high, with nearly 80% of poll respondents in favor of legalization.
