OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) is investigating after two minors were allegedly caught with a stolen firearm and marijuana following a vehicle break-in Monday afternoon in Oshtemo Township.

Deputies were called to a business on West Main Street around 3 p.m. after it was reported that two minors were breaking into a vehicle, authorities said.

The sheriff’s office did not specify which business the incident happened at, however, deputies said the two ran to the nearby Menards after staff from the undisclosed business confronted them.

While being detained inside the store, authorities said they found that one of the minors was in possession of a handgun that came from the vehicle that was broken into at the previous business.

Deputies also found that they had marijuana, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities said the minor that was found with the handgun was taken to the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home while the other was released to family, pending charges.

“KCSO reminds the community to always lock their vehicle doors when entering a store and strongly encourages firearm owners to avoid storing firearms in their vehicles. Preventing easy access to firearms helps reduce crime and enhances public safety,” deputies said in a news release.

Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact KCSO at 269-383-8745 or Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.
