New reforms may be on the horizon for the cannabis industry in New Jersey, as proposed legislation would allow medical marijuana facilities to skip the often-slow process of municipal approval to begin recreational sales as well.
The bill was introduced by state Senate President Nick Scutari (D-Union), a leading advocate for the cannabis industry in New Jersey. His bill would allow medical marijuana facilities to bypass that approval process with the municipalities and start selling their products for recreational use.
Currently, only about a third of municipalities have some form of marijuana sales, whether medical or recreational. As a result, the industry’s rollout has been much slower than initially anticipated. Many towns in the state have chosen to prohibit any cannabis dispensaries at all, and Scutari’s bill will likely face push-back from some of these communities.
