JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – If you want to sell medical marijuana in Jackson, it could soon cost you more.
The Jackson City Council is expected to consider amending its zoning ordinance to better regulate marijuana dispensaries – and raise the cost for a privilege license to operate.
“Right now, we are only able to charge, or collect fees, based on the current privilege license ordinance per the state of Mississippi. However, a couple of years back, the state instituted a different fee structure for regulated medical cannabis businesses. The city just wanted to bring forward an ordinance that is up to date and in line with state statute,” said Yika Hoover, deputy director of Economic Development.
Currently, a privilege license to do business in the capital city is $40. However, the state allows municipalities to charge between $2,500 and $5,000 for marijuana-related businesses.
Under the city’s new ordinance, Hoover said Jackson would be charging dispensaries $1,000 for a license to operate.
“Others charge about $2,000 per medical cannabis. Jackson is actually lower than other municipalities in the state of Mississippi,” she said.
The measure is expected to be voted on by the council at its next meeting on March 18.
