GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Over $4 million in state marijuana tax money will be coming to communities in Kent County this year as part of the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act.
The state treasury is paying out a total of nearly $100 million in marijuana excise tax disbursements to 298 municipalities and four tribal governments across the state.

Kent County, Michigan’s fourth most populous county, is getting $2.2 million as part of that funding, according to state data. Several communities in Kent County are also set to get a cut of the marijuana payments.
Grand Rapids will get $1.4 million, Cedar Springs and Lowell will each get $349,372, and the villages of Sand Lake and Sparta will each get $58,228.
Grand Rapids was the third-highest on the list ranking how much each Michigan city will receive, behind Detroit and Ann Arbor, which are set to receive $3.1 million and $1.5 million, respectively.

Aside from the nearly $100 million in disbursements to municipalities, counties and tribes, more than $116 million was sent to the School Aid Fund for K-12 education and another $116 million to the Michigan Transportation Fund.
“Municipalities, counties, and tribes certainly benefit from their local cannabis businesses in many ways, including good-paying jobs, community involvement, and increased revenues for important priorities in their budget,” said Cannabis Regulatory Agency Executive Director Brian Hanna. “This portion of the excise tax revenue makes a direct impact in the communities where our licensees work and live.”
