HARRISON (WKRC) — The number of cannabis dispensaries in Southwest Ohio has reached nearly two dozen, with the latest addition being Nectar in Harrison.

The store, which opened in February, is strategically located near the Indiana border, aiming to attract customers from the neighboring state where cannabis remains illegal. Tracy Green, Nectar’s Ohio operations director, explained the location choice.

“So, as long as you’re of consenting age, as long as you’re 21, then you can purchase in the state of Ohio,” Green said. “So, Harrison is conveniently located kind of on the outskirts of Ohio. So, we’re available for multiple residents of different states to come visit us.”

Despite advertising restrictions in Ohio, Nectar has found ways to draw in customers.

“So, there are some challenges in terms of being able to advertise and make your presence known in the state of Ohio. So we do what we can, but folks are really beginning to come in, and we’re starting to see regular customer flow,” said Green.

It’s illegal to advertise cannabis in Ohio, but legal to buy. It’s illegal to buy or possess it in Indiana, but Ohio and Michigan dispensaries both advertise in Indiana, including along I-74 heading into Ohio.

Nectar, an Oregon-based company, operates dispensaries in Oregon and California as well. The Harrison store is its fifth in Ohio and third in the Greater Cincinnati area. Unlike other dispensaries that began as medical-only, Nectar’s store does not have a two-door entry system, and products are visible, though real cannabis is kept behind closed doors.

Green declined to provide specific sales figures but indicated that each store can generate tens of thousands of dollars in daily sales.

“Ohio is a big focus right now of our organization. They would be a significant operator and really a big contributor to the business,” Green said.

Ohio dispensaries sold over $333 million worth of cannabis products for recreational use between last August and mid-February. Nectar’s Harrison store is the 23rd adult-use dispensary in Southwest Ohio, with the state joining 23 others allowing legal recreational cannabis sales.
