PEKIN (25News Now) – Pekin City Council has voted to bring in a new cannabis dispensary at a historic downtown location.

Miggy’s Shop LLC requested a special use for a dispensary in the 300 block of Court Street, which is the site of the former Pekin Performing Arts Center.

Under the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, the store would be licensed as a “social equity” dispensary.

Pekin City Manager John Dossey said dispensary sales will generate thousands of dollars for Pekin’s public safety pensions and help increase economic activity in the downtown area.

“It’s coming whether we like it or not. My mindset was to set yourself up to be eligible to have shops and to get those revenues when they present themselves,” said Dossey.

It’s not clear yet when the cannabis dispensary will open for business.
