After medical cannabis was officially legalized in Kentucky on January 01, 2025, preparations among its would-be operators are coming close to being finalized.

According to local news publication Local 12, who spoke with the Executive Director of the state’s medical cannabis programme Sam Flynn, the state should have issued final approvals to growers within the next two months.

While he neglected to give a specific date for the launch, he said: “I would certainly hope that we will have cannabis available at least in some parts of the state by the end of the year.”

Rachel Roberts, a former state lawmaker and head of the Kentucky Cannabis Industry Coalition, suggested that sales might come ‘a little later this summer.’

Since the start of the year a reported 7000 Kentuckians have applied for medical cannabis cards, with the vast majority of these being approved.

While Kentucky has secured a waiver for medical cannabis seedlings to be distributed, prospective cultivators are still awaiting final clearance before they can begin growing.

One such company is Cresco Labs, which recently announced that it received a tier three cultivation license in the state, allowing it to manage and operate a 25,000sq ft growing facility.

As one of only two companies to receive this comprehensive license in Kentucky, it is expected that this will be the largest facility in the state, with current legislation only allowing a maximum of 115,00sq ft of overall growing space across the state.

“The cultivation license allows for the construction of a state-of-the-art cultivation facility with up to 25,000 square feet of canopy, enabling us to deliver the quality and scale we are known for. We’ve spent the last two years focused on solidifying the core and increasing our free cash flow,” Cresco Labs CEO Charlie Bachtell said.
