An Elloree man is dead and another man is injured. Their neighbor is suspected of shooting them after consuming marijuana gummies, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.

Darius Aiken, 19, was shot in the chest and died at the scene, Calhoun County Coroner Donnie Porth said.

Another man was flown to Prisma Health Richland in Columbia after he was hit by shrapnel as he tried to run away, Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers said.

The incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. Friday at 336 Cardinal Road.

Calhoun County deputies interviewed the alleged 16-year-old shooter at the scene.

The 16-year-old male allegedly told deputies that he’d consumed marijuana gummies and began “feeling hot,” Summers said.

He then went into the kitchen of his home where he claimed he saw two men “wearing white masks,” Summers said.

The teen retrieved a shotgun from his father’s bedroom, cocked it, returned to the kitchen and opened fire, Summers claims.

The two men in the kitchen weren’t wearing masks, Summers said. He believes the suspected shooter’s marijuana gummies contained some type of hallucinogen.

Summers said the teen remains in the custody of the S.C. Department of Juvenile Justice with pending warrants of murder, attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Summers said he’s not releasing the name of the accused shooter because he’s a juvenile.

He also said it’s not known if the teen will be charged as an adult.

Summers said the case remains actively under investigation and there is no threat to the community.
