Crime
A Massachusetts attorney pleaded guilty Wednesday to participating in a conspiracy with three others to smuggle contraband into a federal detention center in Rhode Island.
Theresa Marie DiJoseph, 51, conspired with three other individuals in late 2023 to smuggle 10 papers soaked with K2, a synthetic marijuana, into the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Center in Central Falls, R.I., said Acting U.S. Attorney Sara Miron Bloom.
Investigators say she had a personal relationship with detainee Shawn D. Hart, 47, and used a visiting room meant for attorneys conducting legal work with clients to meet with him multiple times.
During an attempt to visit with Hart on Dec. 1, 2023, Wyatt correctional officers seized 10 sheets of paper that appeared “discolored, thicker than normal, and to have been wet and dried,” from DiJoseph, officials said.
The papers were tested at an FBI lab that confirmed they contained Schedule I controlled substances, according to authorities.
DiJoseph pleaded guilty to one count each of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance analogue, conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance, and providing a prohibited object to the inmate.
She also admitted to making false statements to the FBI during their investigation, according to Bloom.
DiJoseph’s sentencing is scheduled for June 12.
