A notorious Irish crime boss who lived in a bulletproof house near Tamworth while running a drug empire will feature in a new BBC documentary.

Thomas ‘Bomber’ Kavanagh was the feared head of the Kinahan gang’s UK faction before he was eventually taken down by police and jailed in 2022.

Kavanagh, who lived in Mile Oak, near Tamworth, is currently serving a a huge prison sentence for smuggling “multiple kilos” of cocaine and cannabis into the UK.

He was the “main man in the UK” for the gang and was linked to crimes stretching across Europe.

But his world came crashing down when Kavanagh was jailed for 21 years for orchestrating a £30million drug smuggling racket.

Kavanagh will feature in the new four-part BBC series about the organised crime group titled ‘Kinahan: The True Story of Ireland’s Mafia’.

The documentary, airing the first three episodes today, tracks the cartel from its early beginnings as a small-time street dealing operation in 1980s Dublin, to one the world’s most feared and notorious criminal organisations.

BBC producers said it will show gangland feuding, double dealing, betrayal, and murder.

Episode three of the four-part crime series will dive into Kavanagh’s crimes and reveal the inside story of how he was eventually brought to justice.

The documentary will reveal new insight on the gang through exclusive interviews which have never been seen before.

It will be told through the voices of journalists, members of law enforcement, and the ordinary people whose lives have been caught in the crossfire.

The first episode will begin with the story of Kinahan gang member, David Byrne, who was shot dead at the Regency Hotel in Dublin in 2016 during a boxing weigh-in.

In the second episode, viewers will see how the cartel grew more powerful due to levels of cocaine consumption across Europe, in the early 2000s.

The first three episodes of the documentary will be available on BBC iPlayer from 6am today, March 31. The final episode will be available on BBC iPlayer at a later date.
