The value of hemp production in the United States last year totaled USD $445 million according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), up 40 percent from 2023.
The USDA annual report on the performance of the nation’s hemp cultivation industry breaks down 2024’s results into several categories.
Industrial hemp in the open (all utilizations):
Planted area: 45,294 acres, up 64 percent in 2024.Production value: totaled $417 million, up 46 percent.Area harvested: 32,694 acres, up 55 percent from 2023.
Floral hemp in the open:
Production estimated at 20.8 million pounds in 2024, up 159 percent.Area harvested estimated at 11,827 acres, up 60 percent.Average yield: 1,757 pounds per acre, up 669 pounds.Value of floral hemp: $386 million, up 43 percent from 2023.
Grain hemp in the open:
3.41 million pounds production in 2024, up 10 percent from 2023.Area harvested estimated at 4,863 acres.Yield estimated at 702 pounds per acre, down 77 pounds.Value of grain hemp totaled $2.62 million, up 13 percent from 2023.
Fiber hemp in the open:
60.4 million pounds in 2024, up 23 percent from 2023.Area harvested estimated at 18,855 acres, up 56 percent.Average yield estimated at 3,205 pounds per acre, down 848 pounds.Value of hemp grown for fiber totaled $11.2 million, down 3 percent from 2023.
Seed hemp in the open
Estimated at 697,000 pounds in 2024, down 7 percent from 2023.Area harvested estimated at 2,160 acres, up 61 percent on the previous season.Average yield for estimated at 323 pounds per acre, down 236 pounds.Value of hemp grown in the open for seed totaled $16.9 million, up 482 percent from 2023.
Hemp under protection (indoors, greenhouse etc.):
3.52 million square feet in 2024, up 9 percent from 2023.Value totaled $28.7 million, down 13 percent on the previous year.
The Hemp Production and Disposition Inquiry, a census of all growing operations in all 50 US states, was utilised to gather acreage, yield, production, and price data for the 2024 crop year. This year’s inquiry, carried out in February and March, involved 8,153 respondents.
