The Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration (ABCA) continued its crackdown on illegal cannabis businesses in the District of Columbia, shutting down two more establishments on Tuesday, October 17. This brings the total number of such businesses padlocked since July 15, 2024 to ten.

The ABCA, in conjunction with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), served Closure Orders to Cannabis Karma and Capitol Budz, both of which were operating as unlicensed cannabis retailers in violation of previous Cease and Desist Orders. Both businesses were deemed a credible and imminent danger to public health and safety, prompting the ABCA to shutter their operations and padlock their doors.

During the closures, investigators discovered significant quantities of illegal cannabis products, including marijuana, edibles, concentrates, and mushrooms. At Cannabis Karma, authorities recovered over 32 pounds of THC-laced products, while at Capitol Budz, they seized over 32 pounds of such products.

The business owners now have the opportunity to request a hearing before the ABC Board. If the Board approves, the property owners must submit a remediation plan to prevent future illegal cannabis sales on the premises. Failure to comply could result in a $10,000 fine.

In addition to the closures, the MPD executed a search warrant at Coupons R Us on October 13th, recovering over 34 pounds of marijuana, 4.9 pounds of entheogenic mushrooms and other cannabis products. A firearm and ammunition were also found.

The ABCA’s enforcement efforts have been bolstered by Bill 25-872, which granted the agency new civil enforcement powers. To date, the ABCA has issued 26 Cease and Desist Orders and 84 written warning letters to illegal cannabis businesses.

The agency has also been working to educate property owners about the risks associated with allowing illegal cannabis businesses to operate on their premises. By taking proactive steps to prevent such activities, property owners can avoid potential legal and financial consequences.
