MADISON (WKOW) — A coalition is forming in Wisconsin to advocate for hemp consumer safety following an incident at Famous Yeti’s Pizza in Stoughton, where several pizzas were unintentionally contaminated with THC.

THC is the main psychoactive component in cannabis that affects how your brain works when consumed.

Executive Director of Let’s Legalize Wisconsin Bob Hickey Jr. formed this group of Wisconsin Cannabis Advocates to urge lawmakers to enforce essential safety practices for hemp products that are already legalized in Wisconsin.

“There has to be some oversight,” Hickey said. “There should be compliance checks and consumer protections working with the industry.”

The State of Wisconsin defines hemp as “the plant Cannabis sativa L.” This includes all parts of the plant, derivatives and extracts, so long as they have a delta-9 structure with a concentration of no more than 0.3% on a dry weight basis or the maximum concentration allowed under federal law of up to 1%.

Hemp producers are required to have a hemp license in order to sell these products, however, Hickey says, some businesses have found shortcuts when it comes to the potency of these products.

“The main thing I want to get across is, if you like going to a legal state to buy your products, there are the same options here in Wisconsin. But right now, I’m not comfortable saying that, because I don’t know what percentage of those options are anywhere near safe,” Hickey said.

Hickey said the state could change simple things such as requiring product labels.

“A great way to move this thing forward is to educate folks with, ‘Hey this product with this label…this product is cannabis that does the same thing as any other state,” and it is safe for [people] to consumer,” Hickey said.

Hickey said he’s spoken to politicians on both sides of the aisle, and to him, this isn’t a partisan issue, since hemp products are already legal.

Until this guidance is enforced, Hickey said there are ways for consumers to keep themselves educated. For more information, click here.
