Four British nationals were arrested at Samui Airport in Thailand after attempting to smuggle 131 kilograms of cannabis buds into Singapore.

The men, aged between 34 and 63, concealed dried cannabis buds inside their suitcases, according to Naruwat Phutthawiro, the immigration police commander of Surat Thani Province.

The suspects were detained while trying to board a flight to Singapore on Saturday. After authorities intercepted them, they attempted unsuccessfully to flee the scene, reported the Bangkok Post.

Thai immigration police stated that criminal groups are recruiting British citizens to pose as tourists, traveling from Bangkok to the resort island of Koh Samui. Once there, they pick up cannabis shipments to smuggle into Singapore and other countries, as reported by CNA.

In recent days, Thai authorities have seized approximately 375 kilograms of cannabis worth roughly ฿75 million ($2.23 million) from 13 individuals claiming to be tourists at Samui Airport. These individuals planned to transport the illegal substance to Singapore, Hong Kong and Germany, among other locations.

So far, eight suspects involved have already been sentenced to four months in prison by the Koh Samui Provincial Court.
