James Bowersox co-owner of Maui Boyz Cannabis Dispensary

Dec. 30. By Donna Randazzo. Maui Boyz Cannabis Dispensary is the newest CBD dispensary to open in Cornelius, adding to a small, but growing list of stores that carry legal cannabis products in various forms.

Whether used for taking the edge off, reducing anxiety or helping to manage pain, cannabis use is gaining in popularity and residents of Cornelius are supporting these businesses.

Cornelius has seen growth in legal hemp dispensaries over the past few years, in addition to vape shops and tobacco stores.  The past two to three years have seen an increase in cannabis stores, Maui Boyz now being the fourth to open in Cornelius. There were only two in 2021.

Cannabidiol is legal in North Carolina as long as it adheres to state and federal standards. The main thing to remember is to be aware of the THC content and the source of CBD extract. Hemp-derived CBD is legal as long as the THC level does not exceed 0.3 percent.

Business practices

“As we establish our presence in Cornelius, we’re eager to embrace our ethos of innovation and quality,” stated co-owner James Bowersox.

Following the devastating wildfires that hurt Maui’s economy, Bowersox and co-founder Karma Wentworth recognized the need to pivot and establish open up on the mainland.

Maui Boyz is dedicated to supporting the local community, “Our focus on community reflects the collaboration that comes from collective living,” said Bowersox.

Apotheca’s Cornelius location

The Apotheca dispensary, the first to open in Cornelius in 2019, was created as a “trustworthy source of reliable and sustainable cannabis products.” Apotheca was the only store here to carry CBD at the time.

Shortly following Apotheca’s opening came High Life. Kure CBD & Vape opened soon thereafter, and in April of 2023 Twiggs Cannabis & Cigars opened its doors.

Background

Hemp became legal in North Carolina after the 2018 Farm Bill, and, after several changes to the hemp law, hemp became permanently legal in North Carolina in 2022. CBD products must follow federal and state guidelines.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is derived from the hemp plant, and is a non-psychoactive compound. Hemp and marijuana are both cannabis but are different in their THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) amounts, THC being the psychoactive substance. Hemp has a higher amount of CBD than marijuana.

Both THC and CBD are cannabinoids, though CBD lacks the psychoactive properties THC possesses. Under state law, hemp is defined as containing no more than 0.3 percent THC. Another stipulation is CBD must be produced from industrial hemp; if it is made using a flowering plant, it is considered marijuana and illegal.
