While therapeutic properties of cannabis is still a controversial topic in India, researchers at Amrita School of Ayurveda have completed a two-year-long trial that highlights the potential of cannabis as an effective and sustainable solution to treat dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps). Formulation Femme, a polyherbal formulation developed by the company HempStreet, has medical cannabis as the main component along with bamboo silica and ashwagandha. “It’s an industry-university collaboration and the results of the preliminary trials are very promising. As the pilot study has been completed, we can now move forward to further studies and finetuning before launching it in the market. It’s a first-of-its kind attempt and the next level will focus on larger, controlled trials to gather definitive evidence,” says Dr. P. Rammanohar, Director, Amrita Centre for Advanced Research in Ayurveda (ACARA), School of Ayurveda.

Formulation Femme has no psychotropic effects as each dose contains only trace-level quantities of THC (pyschoactive compound in cannabis). From the 300 volunteers who were screened for the study 26 were selected for the trial. “Patients have reported reduction in the severity of pain and no other analgesics were administered during the period. Some even reported sustained relief even after stopping the medication. We learnt from this study that dosage needs to be adjusted for different patients as it depends on their condition,” he adds.

Formulation Femme was tested for safety in an animal study before initiating the exploratory study. All cannabis plants do not produce THC in levels sufficient to produce psychotropic effect. Apart from chronic pain, dysmenorrhea triggers a string of other symptoms in women that can impact daily functioning and quality of life. “Women with dysmenorrhea are struggling a lot with painkillers. They start taking analgesics from a very young age and the situation is alarming. As per our phase one studies, medical cannabis has huge potential and promise in dysmenorrhea management. In the next level of research we will be conducting a comparative study by administering Formulation Femme and commonly used painkillers to two different groups to gather conclusive proof,” says Dr. Rammanohar.
