A new million-dollar ad campaign funded by the US cannabis industry is set to be launched across the US, appearing to be tailored directly to win the favour of President Donald Trump.

Two 30-second television adverts, funded by political lobby group American Rights and Reform PAC, take aim at Trump’s two favoured targets, former President Joe Biden and Canada.

The first claims that ‘Joe Biden and the Democrats’ classified the medicine of ‘millions of Americans’ as a dangerous narcotic, ‘limiting their access to relief’.

While this is not factually accurate, as cannabis has been under Schedule I alongside heroin for decades, it enforces the narrative held by many cannabis advocates that Biden largely failed to make good on his promise of widescale federal cannabis reform, particularly pushing rescheduling through before the end of his tenure.

Again, clearly tailored to try and flatter Trump, the ad states that he is ‘fighting to make America healthy again’, and calls on voters to ask the President to ‘end Biden’s war on medical cannabis and put patients first.

The second claims that ‘Canada is attacking American cannabis companies’, suggesting that its current status as a schedule one prevents Americans from conducting research or being listed on the stock exchange ‘while Canadian companies cash in’.

“This is an America First fight. President Trump had the courage to sign white to try healing American patients. Let’s do it again. Reschedule cannabis and put America first”.

According to CNN, the PAC will spend more than $1 million airing the two spots on cable and streaming services over the next month, specifically targeting Washington DC and West Palm Beach, where Mar-a-Lago is situated.

It also suggests that the PAC is funded by the cannabis industry, and is circulating a survey from Tony Fabrizio, Trump’s top pollster, appearing to demonstrate that there ‘is no significant political demographic group that doesn’t believe cannabis should be legal’.

Whether the ads will be able to sway the President is unclear, and despite rife speculation there is little in the way of demonstrable evidence of his opinion on the subject.
