The City of Minneapolis is considering a new ordinance about the registration of certain kinds of cannabis and hemp businesses. The proposed ordinance requires some kinds of state-licensed cannabis and hemp retail businesses operating in Minneapolis to register with the City. Those registered businesses are also subject to compliance checks, and will be subject to fines if they are found to be non-compliant
The public can submit feedback about the ordinance by April 8.
City staff will present the ordinance to the City Council’s Business, Housing, and Zoning (BHZ) committee on April 8. at the Public Service Center, 250 South 4th Street, Room 350, Minneapolis.
State cultivates cannabis industry with new grants
Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) is helping cultivate the cannabis industry with two new programs: CanNavigate and CanStartup. Through these programs, DEED will provide up to $8 million in grants to community partners to support new legal cannabis businesses.
CanNavigate helps entrepreneurs navigate the regulatory structure of the legal cannabis industry. Grants will be awarded to organizations to provide expertise and technical support in these areas:
Legal services, Taxation, Accounting services, Financials services, and Licensing/permitting.
Up to $2 million in grants may be awarded. Proposals are due by April 11.
CanStartup is designed to help cannabis microbusinesses with startup costs. The state will award grants to nonprofit lenders so they can:
Fund loans to new cannabis microbusinesses.
Support job creation in areas negatively impacted by cannabis prohibition.
Up to $6 million in grants may be awarded. Proposals to are due by April 9.
DEED plans to share a list of CanStartup nonprofit lenders by the end of May 2025.
