For thousands of years, traditional Indigenous medicine has been used to promote health and wellbeing, so it’s a natural fit for Indigenous people to get involved in the THC drink industry.
The first in Wisconsin are Canndigenous THC Seltzers: low-calorie plant medicine beverages that come in three potencies: Uptempo, Midtempo and Downtempo.
With a 15-minute onset time, Canndigenous THC Seltzers provide an hour of relaxation or increased productivity.
Uptempo (5mg THC; 5mg CBG; 12 calories). Aims to provide a positive effect on energy, focus, clarity, motivation, and mood stability while promoting physical comfort. Recommended for daytime use, this citrus and ginger beverage has B12 vitamins and works well with high-energy activities like running, playing guitar, hiking and biking.
Midtempo (5mg THC; 5mg CBD; 30 calories). This green tea seltzer with honey is intended to generate a calm mood, improve sleep and alleviate inflammation and pain. Suggested for moments like cooking, play, and travel.
Downtempo (5mg THC; 5mg CBN; 9 calories). This mixed berry seltzer might lessen stress and enhance sleep. Recommended to drink during chill moments like unwinding in front of the television, reading and a good night’s rest.
Rob Pero, a member of the Bad River Ojibwe and the founder of Canndigenous, founded the company in 2018. In 2022, Canndigenous became the first Indigenous-owned hemp company to be awarded a research grant by the USDA’s Climate-Smart Commodities Program.
“We look at cannabis as a plant medicine and an adult choice,” says Pero.
But the company provides more than adult beverages. It works to enhance Indigenous peoples’ quality of life. Canndigenous is a founding member and ongoing supporter of the Indigenous Cannabis Industry Association (ICIA), which advocates to increase opportunity in hemp and cannabis for the benefit of Indigenous people. Canndigneous supports the ongoing development of Indigenous supply chains in plant medicine and industrial hemp.
“It’s important to understand where we came from,” says Pero. “We’re not just a crew of dudes slapping a label on a can and selling another THC drink.”
Canndigenous beverages are available online for $19.99 per four-pack.
Pero does not think THC drinks are replacements for alcohol. He does believe they are healthier and do not produce a hangover. (The author can attest to this latter part!) They are simply a different choice for socializing or relaxing.
Pero also hopes to alleviate the lingering stigma around THC products.
“I think we’ve changed the paradigm of how we can socially interact and feel a buzz without the heavy haze of alcohol,” says Pero. “I think these taste great, are sustainable and provide a pillar of advocacy and empowerment to help other tribal bands.”
