JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – More legislation is moving forward at the State Capitol as they approach another deadline this week.

A few bills making progress are repeat attempts by lawmakers. For example, direct shipment of wine passed the full House.

That went to a conference committee last session but was held on a point of order in the Senate.

The Tim Tebow Act is advancing which would allow homeschooled kids to participate in extracurricular activities at the state’s public schools.

Rep. Jansen Owen says they’ve added a requirement in response to a frequently asked question.

”We have included in this legislation a requirement that students who participate in these extracurricular sports must take and pass state testing every year,” noted Rep. Jansen Owen.

Rep. Lee Yancey worked on the medical marijuana legislation. Now, he’s working to try and regulate a market that’s currently more accessible.

”Have ended up with a raging marijuana market in our gas stations,” Rep. Lee Yancey said in reference to some hemp and CBD products.

House Bill 1502 would add an age limit to buy those products and would set THC limits for those items, including CBD drinks.

Testing in recent years shows the levels of many products in gas stations have exceeded what’s allowed under federal law.

This legislation would require that the products be tested before being sold.

”What we have is a recreational marijuana program in our gas stations in Mississippi, and we’re working hard to stop that,” added Yancey.

Early voting legislation has passed the full Senate. Sen. Jeremy England’s bill replaces in-person absentee voting with a 15-day no-excuse early voting period.

Governor Tate Reeves has expressed via social media posts that he is against the legislation.
