ALTON—A 26-year-old Aurora, CO, man was arrested about 8:20 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, near Alton on charges of first-offense operating while under the influence and first-offense possession of a controlled substance — marijuana.
The arrest of Juan Jesus Gelvez-Carrillo stemmed from the stop of a southbound 2004 Toyota Corolla clocked at 79 mph on the 4400 mile of the Highway 60 expressway northeast of Alton, according to the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office.
The odor of marijuana was detected coming from the vehicle, and a container labeled “Sativa” and “THCA Rre-Rolled Joints” was observed on the passenger seat. The container held one full marijuana joint and one partially smoked joint.
Gelvez-Carrillo admitted the container held marijuana and said he had smoked marijuana about five hours before the traffic stop, according to the incident report.
He had bloodshot/watery eyes and impaired balance and failed field sobriety tests.
A drug recognition expert determined Gelvez-Carrillo was under the influence of cannabis.
Gelvez-Carrillo also consented to a chemical testing of his urine, and it registered positive for THC.
