CALHOUN COUNTY, S.C. (WIS) – A teen who was allegedly shot by a 16-year-old who investigators believe took marijuana gummies was identified on Monday by Calhoun County Coroner Donnie B. Porth.

Porth confirmed the victim was 19-year-old Darius Aiken.

According to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, Aiken and another person were shot by a teen on Friday, March 14 on Cardinal Road.

Deputies said the teen claimed to see two people in the kitchen with white masks on. They noted the teen told investigators they went into a closet to grab a gun, came back and shot twice, killing Aiken, and injuring another person.

The teen also told deputies they consumed marijuana gummies before the shooting took place and began “feeling hot.”

“We assume his story of the gummy is accurate. And we’re going to do some analysis and find out exactly what was in his system,” Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers said. “And what we theorize is it may have had some hallucinogenic substances in it.”

Investigators said the victims were not wearing a white mask.

Deputies stated this was a routine gathering at the 16-year-old’s home based on the investigation so far.

The father of the suspect shared their side of the story with WIS News 10.

The teen’s father said it was common to see Aiken over at his home making music with his other sons.

“I had to run down in the woods a quarter mile to get him. He said dad I’m so sorry for messing the family up. But, I looked like I saw some people with some masks on outside the window and I was trying to protect the home,” the teen’s father said.

The father said Aiken and his sons had a very close relationship and that it feels like he lost one of his own children.

Summers said they are now awaiting test results from the 16-year-old’s urine samples. He said deputies are investigating to find out where the gummies came from and who purchased them.

Loved ones hope those results will explain this tragedy.

“He’s not a terrible guy. He’s not like that. He did that on instinct because he was raised on that. My father raised him to protect the family,” said the suspect’s brother.

The teen was charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The teen is expected to appear in family court for their charges tomorrow morning.
