FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — Fort Pierce Police reeled in a big catch at Jetty Park, as Hurricane Helene was on the move, but it wasn’t a fish.

Around 2 p.m. Thursday, they found 2 kilos of marijuana inside a waterlogged package, brought near the shore by the storm.

“We don’t know where it came from specifically,” said Fort Pierce Police Detective Kaycee Davis. “We have a long coastline along Fort Pierce and the Treasure Coast, so it could’ve came from anywhere at this point.”

Police say a citizen called them after spotting the package in the water.

“It was right over there, where the water washes into the rocks at the edge here,” said Fort Pierce resident Ronnie Claffey, motioning to the rocks along the jetty.

Claffey and Samantha Brunner saw it all go down, but Brunner’s daughter Kyla Dixon saw it first.

“I saw the whole entire thing, and they just grabbed it,” Dixon shared.

“We were just coming to look at the winds and all water and people catching fish, not that kind of fish though,” Brunner remarked.

It was unusual for them, but police say it’s not the first time.

“It has happened in the past once before during my career,” Detective Davis told CBS12 News Friday. “We do suspect that it was packaged in those type of manners that they were trying to conceal that it was narcotics. It was packaged very tightly…due to the nature of that packaging, the way that we found it, it’s suspected that it’s probably been out there for a very long time, and nothing recent.”

How the package washed up at Jetty Park, where it was from originally, and whether there are more like it out on the open ocean…remains to be known.

“We don’t have those answers just yet,” the detective said.

The detective says there weren’t any markings linking the package to a cartel or anything like that, but they have alerted federal authorities, and this matter is under further investigation locally as we speak.

“I’ll bet you there is more, there’s probably pounds of it, I would imagine,” Claffey opined. “I mean, why would you have one or two? I’m sure there’s plenty more.”

“I don’t doubt that at all,” Brunner added.
