EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEVV) — An Evansville man was arrested after fleeing from officers with a newborn child, drugs, and a gun in the vehicle, according to authorities.

On Monday, authorities say they tried to stop a silver SUV with a license plate number that returned stolen, but that the driver sped off.

Detectives say they later spotted the vehicle on Lynch Avenue. They say they followed the vehicle, then tried to conduct a “vehicle takedown” by blocking the vehicle in the area of Diamond Ave and Old Business 41 to prevent another chase.

Authorities say the driver tried to take off again, but that they were unable to escape and struck a deputy’s vehicle that had been positioned in front of them.

Police say the driver stepped out and was taken into custody. They identified him as 28-year-old Sebastian Buckingham.

According to police, Buckingham has prior felony convictions for dealing marijuana, and resisting law enforcement.

Police say they then called a woman out of the vehicle, who told them her newborn child was also in the SUV. They say the child was checked by AMR at the scene, and was uninjured.

As detectives cleared the vehicle, they say a strong odor of marijuana was coming from inside, leading to a search.

During the search of the vehicle, detectives say they discovered multiple vape cartridges containing a combined total of approximately 700 grams of THC, along with several individual bags of marijuana weighing approximately 480 grams in total. They say they also recovered a loaded semi-automatic handgun

When authorities questioned Buckingham, they say he admitted everything in the vehicle belonged to him, but wouldn’t give any information on where he was getting large amounts of marijuana from.

Buckingham was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail on charges of dealing marijuana, unlawful carrying of a firearm with felony convictions, neglect, and resisting law enforcement.
