The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Wednesday dismantled an international drug racket and arrested five persons allegedly smuggling high-grade marijuana from Thailand to Bengaluru.
Based on intelligence inputs, a team of officials from NCB Bengaluru Zonal Unit intercepted the accused carrying high-grade Cannabis (Hydroponic Weed) at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, and seized about 20 kg of cannabis from them.
According to the police, the accused are in the age group of 25-35 years, working as mules and carriers to bring the contraband from Thailand by people unknown to them.
As per the investigation, the accused, who are from India, are believed to be a part of a trans-national drug trafficking syndicate that sponsored the trips of the arrested persons to Thailand on the promise that while returning to India from Thailand, they would have to carry the bag containing ganja, an official from the NCB said.
“These persons were further given to understand that business of cannabis is not an offence in India and in case they are intercepted, arrangement would be made for their release,” the NCB officials added.
“The public is informed that possession of cannabis is an offence in India and carries a punishment of upto 20 years in prison. Further, the public is advised to be careful against falling into such traps of this trans-national drug syndicate and not carry any baggage handed over by someone without verifying its contents,” officials added.
