A former corrections officer trainee was arrested Friday and is accused of attempting to smuggle contraband into an Alabama prison.

Tommy Middleton allegedly was found bringing approximately 212 grams of marijuana and two cellphones into Fountain Correctional Facility in Atmore.

“The contraband was uncovered during a search conducted by ADOC K-9 Officers,” the Alabama Department of Corrections said in a press release Saturday.

Middleton was taken to Escambia County Jail and charged with possession of marijuana, promoting prison contraband, attempting to commit a controlled substance crime, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental operations, according to the agency.

The investigation is ongoing and could lead to more charges.
